Was ist das?

I must admit when we checked in at London City airport yesterday on a super hot day, I was envious of those next to me flying to Ibiza and other beach resorts. What were we thinking flying to another big city in this heat. But then who knew 3 months ago we would have been followed everywhere by a heatwave? Instead I just bought some duty free spray perfume to cover all eventualities.

And although Oscar and I spent 6 hours schlepping around in 30 degree sweat,I wouldn't have missed this mighty city for any beach. What an intriguing city with such a complex and difficult history. And what fabulous buildings!!

I have always loved a good building- easily impressed by bricks and mortar sadly I would have been a sucker for an empire. And they have a whole island of magnificent Museum buildings. And the modern and contemporary buildings are just as if not more impressive.
I did spend the whole day walking around asking the guy with the map "Was ist das?" Infuriatingly for 2 reasons, he would reply " Je ne sais pas". By the way my attempts at German have been embarrassingly awful and they shouldn't be because I know lots of words. Truly embarrassing as the boy with the map will testify to.

Regardless of all the pomp and splendour, my most favourite thing today was the sombre, unadorned and beautiful holocaust memorial

Very moving.

Tomorrow we off to the remains of the GDR. Oscar is beside himself with anticipation....
